A Scooby-Doo Alien Apocalypse - this week on Z Nation.

(AKA What is happening to this show?)

This week on Z Nation the tin foil hats were out and ready to go as the team headed through “RoZwell” Nebraska the land known for it’s strange “extraterrestrial” occurrences. While driving the team sees a strange light in the sky. With the hope of maybe finding a jet or plane to fly to California they end up finding yet another strange village of survivors. This time, the common belief is that the aliens are coming to save them from the apocalypse. At this point you have to decide if you’re going to comply with the overdone strangeness of this episode or if you’re just going to fight with them the whole time.

Once the team is settled in a bit they are warned to not trust Bernadette (Missi Pyle) the leader of the survivors (hint hint foreshadowing) by a strange man. They then ignore the strange man’s advice and follow Bernadette all the way down the rabbit hole. In this case it’s a room that is an elevator. Nothing quite sums up the whole episode like Doc “What kind of a funhouse acid trip ride is this?” Once they get to the bottom everyone starts regretting the decision to trust the Bernadette (hint hint foreshadowing complete.)

Murphy (Keith Allan) of course being the ass that he is only worried about his survival. Warren’s (Kellita Smith) mentality actually surprised me in this moment. Instead of being the reasonable one of the group she wants to proceed forward rather then go back. The rest of the group willingly complys and they head forward, well except Murphy. This is where the group runs into an “alien” which is really just a messed up zombie. 10k (Nat Zang) thankfully uses his bad assery and gets a head shot on the zombie “alien” before it reaches the group. After quite an exciting zombie explosion Doc (Russell Hodgkinson) “thoroughly” examines the remains and rules the remains as mostly zombie, but with a hint of alien guts.

This is when Bernadette declares she can hear the voices of the aliens and runs off after them. Can I just say how annoying this character is? Okay thanks. Being the good Samaritans they are, they run after her trying to save her from any harm. This leads them down a hallway of weird. I’m talking about FBI agent’s corpses lining the walls, a strange weapon 10K has never seen before, and a massive computer that only Abby (Anastasia Baranova) knows how to operate. Where did her mad computer skills come from? We don’t have a clue.

More zombie aliens attack and Bernadette is taken by one of the “aliens”. The group again mindlessly runs after her. On the way 10k finds another strange weapon, but this time it works and shoots lightning. The group, after killing many zombies makes it's outside, where a UFO is flying above. A beam of light shines down on Bernadette. The group tries to talk her down off the metaphorical ledge, when Murphy decides he too needs to be taken by the aliens and steps into the beam of light. At that point the rest of the group steps in by shooting all western style at the UFO. Warren takes action, which leads to some fancy rainbow of death crap, when she takes the fancy weapon from 10k. This sends the UFO crashing down with a laughable explosion and cinematography effects.

An alien tries to crawl out of the UFO slowly and theatrically. Bernadette runs crying over the injured alien. Warren then pulls the alien mask off, and yes we have now entered Scooby-Doo land. It turns out to be the strange man from the beginning of the episode. There is even a Scooby-Doo style evil plan reveal. Turns out he did all of this for good old crazy Bernadette.

He explains that he has been spreading the rumor that she is crazy in order to get people to leave, so that he could have her all to himself; just another typical creepy “villain” schpeel. This episode makes you pine for the day when you were a kid and could just buy into stuff.

Upset and enraged Bernadette takes Warren’s pistol and kills the strange man with a single shot to the head. They then make their way back to the village and Bernadette lies to everyone. She tells the alien believers that there has just been a delay and the aliens will be there soon. The group, fed up with this whole thing heads on their way towards California.

This episode gets a nice 5/10 for being purely overdone. Too much Scooby-Doo not enough zombies!
